David John Buckley Rutherford, OBE (27th July 1930 – 26th June 2015)
15th July 2015
Over 25 years of invaluable service to UK Youth and Art for Youth London
David was a director of Martini & Rossi whose offices were based in New Zealand House in the Haymarket. When the Friends of UK Youth were formed in 1982, David kindly arranged a lunch party on its top floor – the Martini Terrace – with fabulous views over London. This was the first of many such occasions, among them committee meetings, where members were greeted by waitresses with innocent looking wine glasses which had in them something a great deal stronger, for, as David would point out, it was not called the Martini Terrace for nothing.
in 1985, his wife Elisabeth became Chairman of the Friends, and David, always the perfect partner to his wife, became the Hon. Treasurer. He supported Friends events in every way he could, and nine years later in 1994 when he took office as Master of the Vintner’s Livery Company, he arranged two wonderful Friends wine-tasting events through his generosity and with the kind agreement of the Wardens.
When Art for Youth was launched in the Mall Galleries in 1988, David once again offered his services as Hon. Treasurer, a position he officially retired from in 2007 which didn’t stop his very keen eye for the pounds and pence. In situ on the day – and right through 2014 – invaluable figures hand-written the back of an envelope would speed financial summations.
David had that great gift of making anyone feel cleverer and more important than they really were. His merry laugh and quick wit would diffuse highly-charged atmosphere of exhibition jitters, and absolutely everyone he met became an instant friend.
He received his OBE for services to the wine trade in 1987 and was presented with UK Youth’s long service award in 2008.
